You will need soldiers and Gold coins (gc's) to do this, the amount will vary and your lands will need to be 50% built to enable you to explore further.
You can make this cheaper by building mills that reduces the cost of exploring and building costs and taverns that reduce the cost of drafting soldiers.
Some kingdoms (kd's) take a harsh approach to pure explorers as they serve no purpose only to grow and grow and rarely participate in wars etc, remember its a team game and if you choose the path of pure explorer you will be considered a loner and may find yourself quickly razed (killed off)
